In a recent study scientists have discovered that some snowflakes contain bacteria. Don't worry too much about those faceshots though...it seems this bacteria only affects plants.

The New York Times has an article in their business section called "On a Board, Shredding and Stomping, But Mostly Falling". It's about a 58 year old man learning to snowboard at Whiteface. I applaud him for learning, but most of the snowboard lingo and actions he's describing I've never heard of.

An example:
“Shredding it” meant riding your board on its edges. “Dropping in” meant pointing the nose of your board downhill. When you failed to execute a forward-leaning toe turn, you were supposed to “Superman” — dive forward with your arms extended to break your fall. When you failed to execute a backward-leaning heel turn, you were supposed to “staple yourself to the hill” — fall backward onto (what else?) your butt.

The only term that is remotely correct is Superman, even though it's actually more of a result than a preventative action. I've never heard anyone say staple yourself to the hill, and dropping in and shredding it are totally incorrect.

But I do have to give him props for "stomping a box" on his third day. ;)

The Canadian Avalanche Association offers a free online course on their website. The course is called "The Avalanche First Response Training Program". The course focus (per the website)

"In Canada, we enjoy the world's finest opportunities for winter outdoor recreation. Each year, more and more skiers, snowboarders, mountaineers, and snowmobilers venture into the backcountry with their friends to enjoy what nature has to offer. Unfortunately, each winter, some of these people die in avalanches - either because they don't know how to rescue themselves or because their companions are unable to rescue them.
This course will help you learn avalanche first response skills - what you and your companions should do during and immediately after an avalanche. While this course will introduce you to other aspects of avalanche safety, such as route-finding, snow stability, and trip preparation, it is not intended to replace a face-to-face avalanche safety course. We urge you to complement this basic course with avalanche field training..... "

The link is http://access.jibc.bc.ca/avalancheFirstResponse/index.htm

I've bookmarked it and plan to do it sometime soon. If anyone else decides to check it out I'd love to hear what others think.

Some board thieves were caught at Breckenridge when someone spotted their snowboard amid a pile of gear in the back of a truck. They surrounded the truck until the cops came. The thieves used ladders to steal boards and skis from condo balconies.

http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_7932778

I, like many of you I'm sure, have left boards and gear on a upper floor balcony figuring it was safe. Well apparently not! Guess I won't be doing that anymore.

The ubercute mountain pygmy possum is under threat because of plans to expand a ski resort where it hibernates, according to Cosmos magazine.

The animals hibernate in the snow fields of Mount Buller and the nearby Bogong High Plains and also Mount Kosciusko in the state of New South Wales.

But a new study claims that plans to expand the resort will impact on their habitat and threaten the remaining 1,800 possums.

More info and cute picture at Cosmos magazine.

Most high school teams take for granted that their practice fields are located behind the school.  When I was on my high school swim team, we had to travel 20 minutes to get to the practice pool at another high school and let me tell you that it got old really quick.  So when the snowboarding team at South Burlington High School, in Vermont, wanted to get in more practice than just weekends at Stowe they needed a practice field.  Now the team has a 5000 square foot park on campus that brought the community together to build it. For now it's for school use only, but one day it might be open to the public. And how cool would it be to have freestyle snowboarding as your gym class?

Read more about this at Burlington Free Press.

Burton once posed the question "Will you still be riding when it's no longer cool?" Well it seems that day may be upon us.

National Ski Areas Association has recently released survey results showing that after a decade of growth, snowboarding has leveled off around 29%.

Interesting - if not a little cheesy at times - interview with three of Australias finest snowboarding ladies. Aired on Sunday on a current affairs show 60 Minutes a 15 minute segment featuring Torah Bright, Holly Crawford and Emily Thomas worth a watch.

High Flyers (there is a random blurb to the side of the video that doesn't seem to match the footage..?)

Just incase you have not already read it check out the interview I did with Holly a few months back

Want to love the outdoors without loving it to death?  Check out this guide from treehugger.com: How to Green Your Outdoor Sports.  Offsetting our environmental impact isn't just good for the earth, its good for snowboarding too!  No one wants to see shorter seasons due to global warming.

This guide offers practical tips such as:
- "Think global, play local"
- Choose environmentally friendly methods of transportation like carpools, public transport, hybrids, and biofeuls
- Support green companies and non-profits that give back to the environment
- Practice "leave no trace" ethics
- Buy products made from sustainable materials
- Go minimal! Gear should never be more important than the experience.
- Use your own energy to get you where you are going rather than using snowmobiles, atv's, jetskis, and other motor powered vehicles
- Recycle or donate your old gear, buy used equipment, repair rather than replace old gear
- Pickup trash you see laying around
- Support resorts that use renewable energy

Companies like Arbor, Lib-Tech, Venture, Sector 9, Habitat, and Bamboo Surfboards are using bamboo and other renewable woods in their snowboards, skateboards, and surfboards. Lib-Tech heats its factory on soy-based biodiesel and uses less toxins in the manufacturing process. Arbor donates a portion of the proceeds to help protect and sustain the forests.  One Ball Jay has a new soy based snowboard wax out this year.  We should support these companies efforts to go green and encourage others to follow suit.

According to the Aspen Daily News, ski bums are having increasing trouble finding cheap digs in the region. The growth of the luxury housing market means that affordable housing is becoming scarce - and seasonaires and local workers face being priced out of the rental and house purchase market.
