Summer funtimes

If lazing around on the beach isn't your kind of thing and a summer snowboarding trip isn't on the cards, there are a still a ton of ways you can have an active, outdoor break.

Here are some of our favourite ideas for ways to see the world and get some exercise this summer.

Boardology Mountainboarding Camp (UK)

Online boardstore Boardology is holding its first girl's mountainboard camp this summer. The weekend is taking place from June 1 to 3 at the South West Mountainboard Centre in Bideford, Devon.

It's a camping camp (so don't forget your tent!) and will feature mountainboarding, surfing and massage. There'll be prizes and goodiebags for all and there'll be top female mountainboarders on hand to provide coaching and tips whatever your level.

Surfgirl weekends (UK)

SurfGirl Mag is running a series of weekend experiences in Newquay for girls of all levels this summer.

There are SurfGirl Gul Classic Weekends for beginners and improvers alike. The sessions run September 1 and 2 and 15 and 16. Gul team rider Celine Gehret will be there to offer coaching and instruction.

The weekend of September 29 and 30 sees the SurfGirl Protest Phase Two weekend hit the beach. It is aimed at girls who want to push their surfing to a new level – under the guidance of Protest sponsored rider and British team coach Dominique Kent.

All SurfGirl weekends include coaching with English Surfing Federation instructors, post-surf talk with a sports scientist, a goodie bag and a yoga session with surfer/yoga instructor Mara Blackburn. Girlie Camps (France)

Girlie Camps are offering a series of camps this summer at the supercool southwest French town of Hossegor.

These camps offer daily surf sessions from coaches and Roxy pro riders. All equipment is supplied and all levels are catered for. The camps also include accommodation, breakfast and dinner every day, video analysis and goodie bags. Several camps are sold out already but there are still places at the camps running June 9 to 16, June 16 to 23, September 1 to 8, September 15 to 22 and September 22 to 29.

The camps are open to girls aged 16 and over and there are also extra camps for women aged 30 and over from June 23 to 30, June 30 to July 7 and September 8 to 15.

Billabong Girls Surf Camp (Canada)

Billabong Girls Surf Camps are weekend sessions in Tofino, British Columbia. They include two three hour surfing classes by Surf Sister instructors which cover surfing technique, surfing etiquette, equipment and ocean safety.

The camps are for girls aged 12 and up and there are week-long teenage and mother and daughter weekends available too.

I-To-I Surf Travel Experiences (Worldwide)

Several of the trips offered by i-to-i Travel give you the chance to contribute to local communities and the environment while topping up your tan and improving your surf skills.

As well as longer volunteering opportunities around the world, there are two week trips to a range of destinations where you can catch some waves and make a difference at the same time.

There's Costa Rica where you can help research and look after the local turtle population, a trip to Brazil where you can help at a surf school working with local children and the chance to volunteer at a surf school in the Dominican Republic.

Aloha SurferGirl trips (Mexico)

Based in San Diego (where they also run surf lessons and camps for all ages and levels), Surfergirl surf school is running at least three two night/three day trips to Baja in Mexico.

The trips include pick-up from Diego's Lindbergh field airport, return transport to Mexico, beach condo accommodation, three meals a day, daily surf instruction, use of rash guards, surf boards and leashes and Surfergirl kit.

CLIMBING

Mountaingirl (UK and France)

Climbing skills can be really useful in off piste terrain containing crevaces and other icy dangers. It's also a great way to get ubertoned arms and get some exercise somewhere more picturesque than the gym!

Mountaingirl run climbing workshops and offer bespoke guiding for women of all skill levels in Chamonix and the Peak District. All kinds of climbing are on offer - alpine rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, traditional climbing and bouldering. They're all taught by qualified female guides and there are sessions for all levels.

WAKEBOARDING

The Maven Sessions (US)

The Maven Sessions is a US-wide series of weekend wakeboard clinics for women and girls taught by the Maven Pro athletes. All levels and ages are catered for and they aim to help improve participants confidence, progress their riding abilities, offer board shape education and show how to choose the best set-up.

The sessions cost around $40 and are scheduled to take place in Carlsbad, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Stockton, Fox Lake, IL and Twin Lakes, MI with more locations to be confirmed soon - check out www.liquidforcemaven.com


MOUNTAINBIKING


Over The Bars (US)

Over The Bars is a women’s mountain bike camp based at Snowmass Village, Colorado. It’s taking place from June 24 to 30.

The week is for mountain bikers of all levels and because there are only a maximum of 20 participants, the groups are limited to four students per coach. The camp includes six nights accommodation, three meals a day, transfers to and from Aspen Airport, lift tickets, four days of instruction, raft trip, yoga instruction, seminars, yoga, a massage and goodies.

Girlie Camps (France)

As well as hosting the Girlie surf camps, the French seaside town of Hossegor also hosts the Girlie Skate Camp from July 21 to 28

If you are a beginner you'll get an introduction to the basics of skateboarding or if you've got some skate skills already you'll pick up some new tips and tricks from invited pro skaters and instructors.

Accommodation is in the Girlie House where breakfast and dinner is also provided. There are two two-hour skate sessions a day - both street and park - and side activities such as sightseeing, shopping etc. All campers also recieve a goodie bag.
