Row over Bulgarian Snowboard World Cup date and location

The Big Air Snowboard World Cup to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria December 22, will not be moved to another location and date, despite protests from local politicians.

There were concerns that the installation of the ramp for the event would cause long traffic jams. The ramp is about 100 meters (328 feet) long, 32 meters (105 feet) in width, and 20 meters (about 66 feet) in height, weighing a total of 600 tons with snow.

“We can’t move the event, so it is not around Christmas, as politicians have asked us. The international calendar of events has been announced long ago and we have to stick to it,” the chairman of Bulgaria’s ski federation Tseko Minev said.

“The TV time for it has been booked already. It’s an honor for us to be the host of such an event, together with such big European capitals as Moscow, Berlin, or Copenhagen,” he added.

“The event will not be moved to another part of the city, but neither will I sanction stopping traffic on the Battenberg Square,” Sofia’s deputy mayor for transport Velizar Stoilov said.
