New Zealand

Last weekend, there was no riding partly because I was a bit lazy (when riding here on the weekend, it's a 6:30 a.m. wake-up) and partly because the weather was very average.  This weekend, I wasn't going to let a bit of rain and lack of visibility stop me.

So it begins. After returning from Utah in April, I have spent most of my time thinking about the snow. And finally, the Southern Hemisphere season in  New Zealand starts. Coronet Peak in Queenstown was the first of the resorts to open on the 5th of June. So we thought we'd head on down and celebrate. Turns out, we weren't the only ones.

If I’d stuck to my original plans, I’d be finishing work this week and leaving in two. But my flight has already been moved to December. It’s only $50 to change it each time, and there’s no way I can leave just yet.

The inaugural 100% Pure Winter Games came to a close last weekend amid wintry weather at Coronet Peak. The closing ceremony marked the end of an exciting 10 days of competition, including ice skating, curling, skiing and of course snowboarding. A mini Winter Olympics of sorts, attracting some of the most elite international athletes.

'All systems snow' for the Mt Cook Mackenzie region

It's 'all systems snow' in New Zealand's Mt Cook Mackenzie region which is rolling out the white carpet for the start of the ski season. Mt Dobson got the party started early last weekend - fantastic snow conditions saw the ski field open three weeks ahead of schedule, celebrating its 30th birthday with a hugely popular free skiing day.

June 21, 2009 We’ve been here a month now and I think we’ve done more in the past four weeks than I’ve ever done in a month at home.
